SIG Combibloc announces early plant expansion The event also featured an exclusive lecture by Kantar on Milk Consumer Profile in Brazil. December 2011. Only six months after inaugurating its first plant in South America, SIG Combibloc has just announced an additional EUR 29 million investment in its unit in Campo Largo, Paraná, Brazil. “SIG is expected to grow over 50% in 2011, thus requiring the anticipation of the second phase of the Brazilian plant project. We are planning to expand production capacity to 3 billion packages/year, and therefore generate 30% more direct jobs by 2013”, informed Ricardo Rodriguez, General Director for SIG Combibloc South America Cluster, during his speech at ABLV (Associação Brasileira da Indústria de Leite Longa Vida) year end dinner. The event, supported by SIG, took place last night, December 06, at the Espaço Wynn WTC (World Trade Center), and was elected for the announcement since it gathered the major representatives of the UHT milk industry, which account for approximately 72% of the total volume, in liters, of aseptic carton packages traded in Brazil, according to Canadean Market Research. SIG joined ABLV in 2009, less than 2 years after starting its operations with some of the most prominent UHT milk producers. ABLV comprises 30 producers, holding an approximate 80% market share. Such partnership clearly targets supporting the sector with market data, trend researches, relevant business information, as well as providing technical support and stimulating debates that can foster modernization and constant enhancement of the sector in the country. During the event, Kantar Market Research, represented by its General Director, Carlos Cotos, presented, first hand, an analysis of the milk consumer profile. According to him, Brazilians definitely prefer UHT milk, currently present in 89% of the homes, a 13 p.p increase in the last 8 years. Concentration of UHT milk consumption still remains on upper classes; however, such type of product has gradually become widespread in classes DE, thus more and more consumed. Carlos Cotos also disclosed that half of the sales of UHT milk occur on monthly shopping occasions, and that consumers are deal-prone, i.e., guided by special offers. They also seek information and innovation: 32% happen to read the data displayed on the packages before buying the goods, while 33% enjoy looking and walking around the Points-of-Sales.
